I am not feeling sick, but for the past week I have been coughing up a lot of mucus. I was wondering if there is an herb which is:

A) Good for the lungs
B) Dries the mucus membranes

My girlfriend is suffering from similar symptoms, yet she has been feeling sick and her sternum is in pain

Thanks, any help would be appreciated

peace, take it easy

I managed to cut back excess mucus by drinking a lot of ginger in tea, or eating it in my cooking. Refraining from raw foods, or cooling down in temperature (like drying my hair after washing it).

    no chilled drinks, ice cream

Fa (processed) Ban Xia or Jie Geng.
But Chinese medicine would look at your entire clinical picture which would then differentiate your syndrome, and then point to a representative formula for your condition.

mullein is good for restoring lungs to health.

it sounds as if you two might have some sort of virus, in which case i would recommend osha root (western herb) as it dries upper respiratory and fights viral infections. oregon grape root is also helpful. when over the worst, take the mullein as a tea.

readers digest version, sorry, i am at school and have a lot of other things to get to...:)

There is one treatment principle that is never taught in TCM school. The treatment for phlegm is very un-PC for a profession that is desperate for main stream acceptance.............emesis.

The main treatment principle in both ayurveda and chinese medicine for phlegm is emesis but it is being forgotten.
What I personally do for my self is I drink a half gallon of luke -warm salt water and then make myself vomit. About a cup of mucus comes out and I feel great. I have cured quite a few people with this method.

look into yoga therapy and you will find very complete instructions for ridding yourself of mucus.

hm, why does that not sound appealing to me...? but it's definitely an interesting consideration! of course, one would also try to eliminate mucus-causing foods and address other pertinent issues so one would not need to go there.....

anyhow, what i think this fellow is asking about is mucus that is related to a virus, not a chronic condition, which would mean the mucus is primarily in the lungs and would not benefit from emesis...?

mucus problem anywhere seems to benefit from emesis.

I also use certian things to change the quality of mucus so that it is easier to expel. The minerals in pure raw goats whey are amazing for that.
I have also had to use goat yogurt

There's a blend by New Chapter called "Breathe!" that has all the mushrooms, Cordyceps, Reishi, Artists Conk, Maitake, Oregon Polypore and Zhu Ling. If I feel the weather changing or there's some kind of virus that affects the lungs going around I take it and it has really helped. They make another blend called Immune Host that is good for overall immunity boosting. I also cut out all dairy, sugar (very mucous forming). The Master Cleanse does the salt-water flushing, but they don't throw it back up. Not sure if it's for mucous or not.
