It is well known that Gan Cao is used to harmonize and moderate other herbs, and in some cases to neutralize their toxicity or to act as a remedy to overdose. Has anyone heard of using Gan Cao to neutralize acute intoxication, say from the ingestion of psychotropic plants?

Re: Gan Cao neutralizes intoxication??
Fri, October 2, 2009 - 1:58 PMNo, I haven't heard of it for acute intoxication (although it seems feasible that it might work that way in some cases). It's a major herb for modern liver therapies from various hepato-insults including drug/alcohol abuse. It might help to ask about specific plants and/or define 'toxic' and 'intoxication' since common meaning, physiological meaning and TCM meanings can all be different in various cases. -

Fri, October 2, 2009 - 8:00 PMNope, ya can't do it with that plant, but it eases discomforts with stomach and such when one is so intoxicated. It is a must know, for croton seed poisoning tho. Can stop it in its tracks.
