Hi, I've been having a problem for the last 6 months that I haven't been able to get rid of and the Western Doctors can't seem to find anything wrong yet.
My acupuncturist has told me that I have a weak spleen (I've had childhood asthma), that my heart fire is invading the kidney/bladder and I have a lot of damp heat in my lower abdomen. As a result, I've had a chronic burning/un-smooth sensation while urinating and sometimes the urethral/vaginal area feels swollen and tender. I've also noticed that if I press down on my lower right abdomen, it feels sore/painful.
This all happened after having sexual activity with someone I was seeing but I'm not a sexual person. I was worried that I had an STD but I've been checked multiple times and there is nothing. I'm just a busy grad student with a lot of stress and the fact that this problem has been lingering for this long just scares and upsets me.
I've given up coffee and alcohol and most dairy. I'm still working on eliminating sugar as I have a sweet tooth and am also big on raw foods.
What advice can you give me? Are there any exercises that I can do? Are there some foods I should be eating/avoiding?
Thank you so much for any help.

Re: Advice for Hot dampness: urinary problem
Mon, April 6, 2009 - 9:38 AMSounds like fungus took root during a time of temporary irritation/inflamation. ...they are tenacious.
You are right to totally quit sugar. Replace any use of white sugar craving with fruit.
Increase system Ph by taking apple cider vinegar with salads; increase cirus intake.
Let us know if symptoms ease up by next week. -

Wed, April 8, 2009 - 11:58 PMThank you Briggi.
What do you mean fungus took root? Could you please elaborate?
I've started exercising and do yoga this week and that seems to really help. Does Yoga help balance chi?
Thank you! -

Re: Advice for Hot dampness: urinary problem
Thu, April 9, 2009 - 12:31 AM...by fungus I mean yeast and stuff like that, which is a fungus. And yes, fungus puts out little roots. Fungus is an organism that seeks a symbiotic relationship with its host and is self-perpetuating. It will seek to stimulate conditions within that are most beneficial to its continued thriving. That is to say the localized heat and dampness.
In the Chinese view, you need to cool down the area, and cooling foods and cooling practices will do that. For instance lowering the PH of the area to change the environment against the fungus.
Yes, yoga is beneficial to attain a wholesome state, a centered grounded state from which you can focus on regaining balance. Yoga is cooling. Yoga enables body intelligence to move things along towards a whole state.
I must tell you to try the Chinese fermented tea called Kambucha, available in most whole foods stores. On bottle per day will lower your PH. Kambucha is a live probiotic drink, containing some acids that are anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and promote a very healthy digestive process. Kambucha passing through your liver, kidneys, and urinary tract make for an excellent cleansing flushing effect....
Besides Kambucha is delicious.
If you want to then join the Kambucha tribe to learn how to grow it at home for very little cost. -

Re: Advice for Hot dampness: urinary problem
Tue, May 19, 2009 - 9:46 PMKombucha...and you can grow it yourself, there is plenty of imformation in several tribes devoted to it. It is actually Russian in origin, none of my Chinese Professors (MD's & Licensed Acupuncturists) have even heard of it. My personal theory is that Kombucha nourishes yin (which cools the body) & generates fluids, both of which will help with UTI like signs. Good luck! -

Re: Advice for Hot dampness: urinary problem
Tue, June 23, 2009 - 12:03 AMI would stay away from raw foods and cook/ steam all your vegetables. The problem with a damp heat is that you were very cold to begin with and tried to fix the cold energy by increasing fire. Eating a warm meal in the morning that is high in proteins and vegies is good and drink it with a cup of ginger tea. go to www.sacredpeaks.com to get directions on making the tea correctly. Creating balance in what you eat will make all the difference. Eating foods that are considered cool or warm are good such as kale, collards, beets... Fires and cold are things like bananas, fried chicken, chocolate, eggplant...
Acupuncture really helped me get over UTI symptoms but make sure you eat real food that is warm before and after your treatment. (i.e. no processed foods out of a box or can or protein bar. cook something for yourself) It takes a lot of chemical engery to have acupuncture so you must eat food to keep it healthy. Plus as my acupuncturist said to me "I see you once a week for 40 mins. That's it. You have to spend the rest of the week making sure your eating the right foods and exercising. I can only do so much in 40 mins and it will get you no where if you undo it all week with diet." - Ana Noyes
Exercising daily until you break a sweat (at least) is very good for getting rid of damp heat. twitter taichicoach for more info exercises that are good and free if you need them.
As for irritation in the immediate area I would buy some probiotics that need to be refrigerated and place one capcels in your vagina at night before you go to bed. This will provide good bacteria right to the source of the issue if yeast or bacteria are the issue. the probiotics will eat and destroy the bad bacteria that are causing the discomfort. in the morning there will be discharge so don't freak out. You can do this anytime you begin to have that uncomfortable feeling in your urethra. Though you may not test for bacterial vaginous you may still have some that are causing you to feel discomfort. My doctor recommended this treatment to me and it was really wonderful.
Becareful with lowing your pH. there is a fine line between good pH for keeping UTIs away and creating too acid of an environment that will contribute to a UTI.
Just some food for thought. I'm not a doctor so you should consult one before trying anything on this website.
